Conference Event Preview

Meet the Editors-in-Chief & Cambridge Academic Flash Talks

As part of the 4th International Symposium on Green Development of Urban Agglomerations & China–UK Bi-lateral Symposium on Urban Climate Resilience and Green Transition, two special exchange events — “Meet the Editors-in-Chief” and “Cambridge Academic Flash Talks” — will be held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, on 28 September 2026.

Event Highlights

• Inside the editorial decision-making process: From the strength of the scientific question and evidence to conceptual contribution and readership, gain insight into how editors assess novelty, significance, and broad impact.

• Frontiers in urban sustainability: Discuss emerging topics including climate change, urban health, ecosystem services, resource circularity, urban agglomeration coordination, social equity, and artificial intelligence.

• Interaction rather than one-way presentations: Through moderated conversations, open Q&A, on-the-spot responses, and informal exchange, participants can bring real questions directly to editors and peers.

• Connecting research, communication, and collaboration: Start from an unfinished study, an emerging question, or a potential collaboration idea, and seek new feedback and connections on site.

Session 1 | Meet the Editors-in-Chief

Time  28 September 2026, 16:30–18:00

Venue  Cambridge, United Kingdom (specific venue to be announced)

This session will invite Editors-in-Chief from Nature Portfolio journals and the Editor-in-Chief of One Earth for an in-depth discussion on international publishing in the fields of urban science, ecology, environmental research, and sustainability. The session will place less emphasis on one-way presentations and instead feature moderated interviews, live Q&A, and open discussion, offering participants a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the editorial perspectives and evaluation criteria of leading academic journals.

Topics for discussion may include:

• What kinds of research are leading journals really looking for?

• How is research on cities and sustainability evolving?

• How can interdisciplinary papers build a clear and compelling central narrative?

• How can place-based or regional case studies speak to global questions?

• How can early-career researchers communicate effectively with leading journals?

Session 2 | Cambridge Academic Flash Talks

Time  28 September 2026, 19:30–20:30

Venue  Cambridge, United Kingdom

“Cambridge Academic Flash Talks” is not another conventional presentation session, nor is it designed for full-length reporting of completed research. Instead, it emphasizes concise ideas, rapid exchange, real questions, and new connections.

Participants may use a few minutes to introduce a question they are currently exploring, a study still in progress, an idea for which they are seeking collaborators, or an emerging perspective on urban sustainability that is worth discussing with the community.

Participants are encouraged to structure their short talks around three questions:

• What am I working on?

• Why does this question matter?

• What kind of advice or collaboration am I hoping to find here?

Editors attending the event are expected to offer brief, on-the-spot responses to selected research ideas from an editorial perspective, including whether the scientific question is sufficiently clear, whether the international relevance is compelling, where the research design may need strengthening, and how the work could improve its readability and impact.

Who Should Attend

The activities are open to participants attending the Cambridge programme. Researchers working in the following areas are especially welcome:

sustainable development of cities and urban agglomerations; urban ecology and ecosystem services; climate change mitigation and adaptation; resource circularity and urban metabolism; environmental health and social equity; urban planning and spatial governance; natural capital and green finance; energy and low-carbon transition; artificial intelligence and urban science; and other interdisciplinary fields related to urban sustainability.

How to Participate

“Meet the Editors-in-Chief” is open to conference participants. Admission arrangements will be announced separately according to venue capacity.

“Cambridge Academic Flash Talks” will combine advance registration with on-site participation. Participants who would like to give a flash talk may scan the QR code below and submit the following information:

• Name, affiliation, and research area;

• Research question or project title to be introduced;

• A research summary of no more than 150 Chinese characters / approximately 100 English words;

• The type of advice sought or potential collaboration interests.

If registrations exceed available presentation slots, the Organizing Committee will select flash-talk speakers based on thematic relevance, disciplinary diversity, and potential value for exchange. Participants not selected for a flash talk are still welcome to join the open Q&A and informal networking sessions.
